Staying Healthy and Fit During Ramadan

During the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims are required to fast, which is to refrain from drinking and eating from dawn until dusk for one whole month. So naturally, a lot of people expect to lose weight during this time. However, many people find themselves gaining more weight instead during the fasting month. How does that happen?

Well, obviously, when the time comes to break one’s fast, some would be so starved that they eat like a glutton and wallop everything in sight. Believe me, that used to be me. LOL! So the most important thing during the fasting month, for those looking to lose weight, would be to get enough of NUTRITION, NUTRITION, NUTRION.

Why is it so important? So that a) your body won’t starve and send signals to your fat cells to stop burning and store it in your body instead, and b) your energy levels will remain the same so you don’t have to stop doing your normal routine of exercising during the day.

Even if you don’t think you’re up for the gym and going on an elliptical or the treadmill while you’re fasting, you can always choose less strenuous, low impact but very effective exercises such as Pilates and yoga. As long as you get the right nutrition, you’ll have no problem with your energy levels during the day.

Just because you can’t eat during the day, it doesn’t mean you can’t get your healthy dose of nutrition. By the time you break your fast, chew slowly and eat in moderation. As we all are encouraged to wake up in the wee hours before dawn to eat our last meal before fasting, take the time right then to make your protein shake and take your multivitamins and health supplements.

Our goal here is to maintain our healthy and active lifestyle during the day despite the fact that we are fasting. That way we can remain healthy and fit during the month of Ramadhan and maybe even lose weight and look good by the time Eid Mubarak celebrations come around! Who wouldn’t want that, right?

This doesn’t apply only for those who are fasting, but to those who also THINK that starving is the best way to lose weight. It IS NOT! If you’re looking to lose weight, this is the only easy way to do it. Eat healthy and have an active lifestyle. If you love food, eat! Just eat in moderation! ALSO, you can’t lose weight if you don’t START changing your lifestyle habits.

Come on! We can do this!
